Inspired by queer history

The name OVAH has been inspired by ball culture.

Ball culturedrag ball culture, the house-ballroom community, the ballroom scene or ballroom culture and similar terms describe a young African-American and Latin American underground LGBTQ+ subculture that originated in New York City, in which people "walk" (i.e., compete) for trophies, prizes, and glory at events known as balls."

Ball culture consists of events that mix performance, dance, lip-syncing, and modeling. Participants "walk" for prizes and trophies. As a countercultural phenomenon, ball culture is rooted in necessity and defiance. Beginning in the late nineteenth century, members of the underground LGBTQ+ community in large cities began to organise balls known as "drags" in defiance of laws which banned individuals from wearing clothes associated with the opposite gender.

Ball culture has shaped much of queer culture and language today. We want to channel the roots of defiance, inclusion and family and create a brand inclusive for all.

That's why we chose the name OVAH.

The term "ovah" is used in ball slang as a variation of "over", meaning "very impressive", or "sickening"; "legendary".

Giving back with every purchase

Ball culture isn't just about voguing, dancing, music and events though. A lot of participants belong to groups known as "houses" a tradition in LGBT communities, and racial minorities, where chosen families of friends live in households together, forming relationships and community to replace families of origin from which they may be estranged for different reasons.

To nod to this, we have chosen akt as our charity partner.

For every purchase you make, we donate 5% of the sale to akt to support lgbtq+ young people aged 16-25 in the uk who are facing or experiencing homelessness or living in a hostile environment. Your purchase helps akt support young people into safe homes and employment, education or training.
